Title: Case Study: Nutrition & Longevity, can we live forever?

The field of anti-aging & longevity has been expanding over the last decades. With life expectancies going up the study of nutrition & diet impact on lifespan has been researched more and more. I want to highlight a recent article published on PubMed titled “The Role of Healthy Diet and Lifestyle in Centenarians , PMID: 37836577.

This study evaluating centenarians (people living to 100 & beyond) identified key lifestyle factors these people followed and practiced more than general population seniors. An expert from this article regarding diet said:

The evidence is strong and accumulating that lifestyle changes, especially diet, have significantly and positively impacted the avoidance and delay of cardiovascular diseases, some forms of cancer, and diabetes [20,39]. Contrary to recommendations in the past 40 years, however, there is little evidence or evidence to the contrary that a low-fat diet may have any positive effect on cardiovascular risk [40,41,42]. Diet improvements such as diets low in calories and carbohydrate restriction have been associated with the prevention and, more recently, the reversal of diabetes” (1)

This is pointing to the flawed dietary advice of low-fat most people were getting in the 80s & 90s, and that it is actually healthy fat based diets like the Mediterranean diet & lower carbohydrate diets that have lead to living the longest. These diets & the best individualized diet for your body are always part of our counselling & prescriptions at an appointment with myself, or other Naturopathic Doctors.

There is far more detail we could get into regarding the benefits of the Mediterranean diet, but to simplify things; the difference between that diet and the Standard American Diet (SAD) is consuming healthy Omega-3 fats from fish & seafood and Omega-9s from olive oil (vs. Saturated animal fats & pro-inflammatory Omega-6 fats like Vegetable & corn oils).

One thing that anyone can do for their health and to supplement cardiovascular health is take an Omega-3 fish oil. You can get one over the counter at the Pharmacy at Queens Health Centre, they carry a very high quality fish oil called “Liquid omega-D3 forte” by Cytomatrix. 1 tsp a day provides over 3000 mg Omega-3s EPA & DHA, plus 1000 IU vitamin D. It is 3rd party tested & verified to be mercury & contaminant free (unlike other bulk fish oils on the market which only self report for contaminants like mercury, and typically provide under 2000 mg of Omega-3s per teaspoon).

Again it’s always recommended talk to your ND before starting any new health products.

Of course beyond diet & nutrition other lifestyle factors were crucially important to living longer including exercise & stress management; again all things we discuss and recommend as Naturopathic Doctors.
