Please allow this side bar from my normal personal health / blog posts on topics such as nutrition & herbal medicines that can treat various disease and illness. This post is focusing on Environmental Health. A mentor of mine; Dr Bryan Rade, ND has started a podcast called “An Optimistic Future” which focuses on simple changes & strategies an individual can do to improve their environmental footprint or help local society/ economy/ environment with our actions. Doctors & researchers know that environmental health is one of the largest impacts/ determinants on local public health & individual health.
More info on the podcast & episodes such as “Cleaning up the oceans”, “Supporting local food production, “Reducing chemical exposure for personal and Global Health”, etc. can be found on their website:
… Or wherever you get your podcast episodes.
For the Reducing food waste discussion, the simple steps outlined are:
l Freezing food that is soon to spoil
l Buying from smaller scale food suppliers (e.g. farmer's markets and food co-ops)
l Remembering that "best before" dates do not tell us when a food will actually spoil. Reference: "Reducing Food Waste" episode with The Leftovers Foundation (use common sense sniff/ smell/ taste foods to help determine if it is spoiled)
The bigger steps you could take to help this cause:
l Reduce food waste by volunteering for a local food rescue
l Donating to a local food rescue
l Telling your local politician that you support legislation that mandates viable food be donated to food shelters (rather than thrown out)
If supporting local businesses and the Canadian economy/ Canadian jobs & manufacturing is important to you, you can also check out this sister website; Made Local Group for lists of Canadian made products. Search their database of products/ companies by entering anything in the search bar (clothing, furniture, etc.)
I hope this blog post & these resources help inspire small changes that you can make to better your community or even our planet, one person at a time.
As always, you can book a consult with me to work on your personal & Environmental health online at:
or by contacting the Queens Health Centre.
